Whether You’re Buying a Home in Turks & Caicos, Or Just Traveling, Here’s Why You Should Go
The Turks & Caicos Islands encompass everything you could ever ask for in a dream destination. With 350 days of sunshine a year, and dazzling blue waters that lap its soft, white sandy shores, this archipelago provides world-class amenities and infrastructure, safety, security, and privacy. And the 400,000 travellers who visit Turks & Caicos’ hotels and resorts each year would definitely be inclined to agree!
Tourism is the Turks & Caicos’ top economic activity, and the islands are one of the few places in the world where visitors outnumber its citizens by more than tenfold. The island nation also has a growing financial services sector, which is supported largely by its status as a tax haven.
Home to just 40,000 residents that occupy 9 of its 40 islands, Turks & Caicos is gaining rapid attention and traction for its seclusion and natural beauty that remains largely untouched. Residents on the islands continue to appreciate living in one of the world’s most idyllic locations – thanks to the efforts of the Department of Environment and Coastal Resources (DECR) that protects the area’s valuable ecological and historical assets.
An Easy-Access, Connected Island Location
Turks & Caicos is located just 90 miles (145km) north of the Dominican Republic and Haiti, 385 miles (620km) east of Cuba, and 575 miles (925km) from Miami, Florida. To the east of Turks & Caicos, you’ll find the Turks Islands, with Grand Turk and Salt Cay.
On the west are the Caicos Islands, which comprise Ambergris Cay, North Caicos, Middle Caicos, South Caicos, Parrot Cay, Pine Cay, and Providenciales. While East and West Caicos form part of this collective, they are currently uninhabited. Grand Turk and Providenciales are Turks & Caicos’ most populous and developed islands among the archipelago, and there are also 3 private islands.
The gateway to the islands is the Providenciales International Airport, located on the Caicos side of the archipelago arrangement and serviced by a number of local and international carriers. Flights are also available between the larger islands, which are equipped to handle aircrafts.
Turks & Caicos offers easy access for citizens from the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada, and visas aren’t required for residents traveling from these countries.
The islands are well connected in more ways than one. Wi-Fi and GSM calling work exactly as you would expect, while a well-developed transport network gets you to and from wherever you need.
Much of the land that makes up the archipelago is quite flat, with its highest point being on the Blue Hills at just 161 feet (49m) above sea level.
Like the Bahamas, the Turks & Caicos Islands were formed from the remnants of North America’s split from West Africa. Evidence of this can only be found under the layers of limestone rock that has formed over hundreds of thousands of years – together with the Turks & Caicos’ barrier reef which is accessible from Providenciales. Stretching for 310 miles (498km), the reef is the third largest in the world and a celebrated attraction among marine enthusiasts.
